Welcome to the Inaugural GeoSmart Location Innovation Awards for 2009

At GeoSmart we believe that location based applications (LBS) on mobile phones and converged devices will be commonplace in 4-5 years time. We want to bring that time forward.

The Location Innovation Awards are designed to give Kiwis the opportunity to use their imagination to help shape the future.

The concept behind LBS is the ability to interact with people and services in real time with the focus on location. The ubiquity of the mobile phone is the core element, it is the one device that people have with them all the time.

THE CHALLENGE: Develop a location based application concept. You don’t have to build the application, although that would be great. You have to present the concept of your application according to the guidelines in the entry pack. Application Categories: Social Networking, Proximity Based Marketing, LBS Games and AA MAPS Biz Locator Widgets.

*The competition starts on 6 October 2008 and entries must be in by 16 February 2009. There will be 4 Category Prizes for best solutions for: Proximity-Based Marketing, Social Networking LBS Games and AA Maps widget.

The winners of the Proximity-Based Marketing, Social Networking and LBS Games categories will receive a TomTom Go720 portable navigation device and a Sony Ericsson C702 GPS phone. The winner of the AA Maps widget will receive at TomTom Go720 portable navigation device and a 4 day Short break in New Zealand in a Maui Spirit 4 Motorhome, including a Maui Premium Pack.

The overall winner, selected from the 4 category winners, will additionally win a trip to San Jose to attend the ‘Where 2.0’ Conference May 19-21 2009. This prize includes: flights, accommodation and registration fees.

Spot prizes will be given for merit worthy entries that do not win a Category Award. Each of the 3 best student entries will receive a Blackberry Pearl 8110 Smartphone with GPS and the best domestic tourism entry will receive a Tomizone Enabled D-Link DIR-300 Wireless Modem/Router enabling them to set up their own Wireless Hot Spot. Other spot prizes will be announced during the course of the competiton.

AWARDS Update

Matt Weston and Phil
Matt Weston proudly accepts the Grand Prize from GeoSmart GM Phil Allen

20 March 2009: It's all over, the crowds have gone home and Matt Weston is updating his passport, ready for his big trip to attend the Where 2.0 Conference in San Jose in May. As well as winning the Proximity Based Marketing Award, Matt won the Grand Prize with his application Get Somewhere, which is designed to make using public transport far more user friendly.

Neil McCallum won the Award for AA Maps Widget with his application House Mouse, designed to put house buying back in the hands of the customer, helping them to find property based on their criteria rather than that of the real estate agent. Once found, it includes optimisation of the best fit of properties and the best order to visit them in, including printed turn by turn directions from AA Maps.

TBWA\WHYBIN TEQUILA\ took away both the Social Networking and the LBS Games Awards with Facebook Carpool and Adipush respectively. They showed that there are agencies in New Zealand that understand the power of LBS and we look forward to seeing some of their concepts become reality.

More information will follow including all the finalists and prize winners and cameo photos from the Awards on this site shortly. In the meantime we are delighted to announce that we will be running this event again with the 2010 GeoSmart Location Innovation Awards. Bookmark this space.
